EV Charging

Electric Vehicle (EV) chargers are designed to recharge the batteries of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles and are available in several power ratings to suit different applications. The most common domestic charger is the 7kW AC charger, which provides a full charge in approximately 6–8 hours and typically costs between £800 and £1,300 fully installed. A slower 3kW charger is also available, usually for overnight charging, with installed costs ranging from £600 to £900. For commercial premises with a three-phase electrical supply, 22kW chargers offer significantly faster charging in around 2–4 hours and generally cost £1,500 to £3,000 installed.

For public charging locations and fleet operators, DC rapid chargers are the preferred option. A 50kW rapid charger can recharge most electric vehicles to around 80% in 30–60 minutes, with installation costs typically ranging from £20,000 to £40,000. Ultra-rapid chargers rated between 100kW and 350kW reduce charging times even further, often providing an 80% charge in as little as 15–30 minutes. Due to their high electrical demand and infrastructure requirements, these systems generally cost between £50,000 and £150,000 or more to supply and install.

Most modern electric vehicles in the UK use the Type 2 connector for AC charging and the CCS (Combined Charging System) connector for rapid DC charging, while older vehicles may use the CHAdeMO standard. The overall installation cost of an EV charging point depends on factors such as the available electrical supply, cable routing, groundworks, protective equipment, smart charging features, and whether upgrades to the electrical infrastructure are required. Selecting the most suitable charger depends on the vehicle type, charging frequency, available power supply, and whether the installation is intended for residential, workplace, or public use.
